Our February team trip to Haiti took place on February 18 - March 4, 2009. We had a team of 11 people from Maine, New York, Maryland and Virginia on our team.

Technically we had 5 "newbies" on this team however, Jamie Dennett had been to Haiti before. She visited another ministry in another part of Haiti about 10 years ago but this was her first time to travel with His Hands and work with the pastors who are involved in our program. As usual, our primary work project on this trip was to update the children in our Child Sponsorship Program. We had some difficulties doing our work on this trip because we visited Haiti during the time of Mardi Gras.

Schools were closed for many days during our visit and on the days when school was open, many children were absent. As a result, we were only able to process 519 children on this trip - about 200 short of our goal.

(above & left) Typical Haitian Mardi Gras activity involves dressing up in evil, ugly costumes and parading around the streets trying to scare and intimidate people - either with their appearance, or by words or gestures, or even by cracking whips!

On the days when we were able to work, there was always paperwork to go through before we started.

On this trip, Matt also shared the job of interviewing the children. It was a big help to be able to interview two children at the same time!

It takes teamwork to do the children's measurements. Here we see Jamie D. measuring Islande in Terrier Rouge while Kathy records the measurements and Cliff waits to measure her feet.
